Committ to Courage
ABOUT THE MEDAL
The Congressional Medal of Honor was established by a joint resolution of Congress on July 12, 1862. The Medal of Honor is awarded in the name of Congress to a person who while a member of the armed services distinguishes him or herself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his/her life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States.

The President in the name of Congress has awarded more than 3,400 Medals of Honor to our nation's bravest soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines and coast guardsmen. There are currently 105 living Medal of Honor recipients.
